Yoga originated in India as a way to exercise the body and stimulate the mind and the spirit as well. There are six major schools of yoga and thousands of different moves. Here, we have seven easy moves you can try with your parents. They're so easy, you won't know it's exercise!
Cat pose is an easy stretch for the back. Get down on your hands and knees and make sure your back is straight. Now, arch your back all the way up, pretending a string is pulling you up from the middle of your back, and tip your head and your butt down. This helps relax your spine.
Child's pose is a great way to relax. Sit with your legs folded and your ankles on either side of your hips. Now lean forward so your head is touching the floor. You can put your arms to your sides or in front of you. How relaxing!
The Cow pose is opposite of the Cat pose. Get down on your hands and knees and let your tummy sag down toward the ground while you point your chin and your butt toward the sky. Do the Cat pose and the Cow pose one after another for a good stretch.
The downward facing dog is a goofy name for a goofy pose. When you're doing it, you hinge at your hips, so your legs and arms are straight, and you stand in an upside-down V shape. You can get into this shape by getting in the push-up position and sticking your butt up in the air.
Savasana, or Corpse pose, is a very easy one. Lie down on your back with your palms up to the ceiling and your feet hip-width apart. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. This is a great relaxing pose to do after you've done some other yoga and want to rest.
There are many different steps to Triangle pose, but the easiest one involves a nice stretch. Stand with your legs wide apart and your feet pointed in opposite directions. Stretch your arms out and imagine two ropes pulling your arms in two different ways. You'll look like a starfish, but this great stretch wakes up your muscles. The shape your legs form with the floor is the triangle part.
Tree pose is a lot of fun and you can make it harder if you think it's too easy. Stand up with one knee bent out to the side and that same foot raised to your ankle. Clap your palms in front of you and point them to the sky with your elbows out. Too easy? Raise your foot to your knee and stick your bent knee out and raise your hands together over your head. Be careful not to lose your balance!
